SCOTT BRICKMAN

Illinois native Scott Brickman (b. 1963) was educated in the Chicago Public Schools and holds a B.M. from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. in Music Composition and theory from Brandeis University. Brickman learned under both Chester Biscardi and Yehudi Wyner, whom he regards as his most important and influential composition teachers. Since 1997 he has taught at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where he is Professor of Music and Education.

 

At UMFK, Scott has served two three-year terms as Chair of the Arts and Humanities Division, and was the first Chair of the newly created Arts and Sciences Division. Brickman is an active member of AFUM, the Faculty Union of the University of Maine System, as well as the Maine Education Association, of which AFUM is a local.  Scott has been a member of the Wisconsin Alliance of Composers since 1984, which, as an undergraduate, he helped found. He was the treasurer of the New England Conference of Music Theorists from 2012-2015, and has been the co-chair of Region I of the Society of Composers since 1999.

 

Brickman composes both acoustic and digital music. Recordings of his music appear on the New Ariel, Capstone, SEAMUS, ERM and PARMA (Ravello) labels. His music has been performed in thirteen countries across Europe, the Middle East and North and South America, as well as in over half of the 50 United States, by ensembles such as the Windy City Winds, Wisconsin Arts Quintet, Oakwood Chamber Players, Lydian String Quartet, the Auros Group for New Music, the New York Miniaturist Ensemble, Basso Moderno, Tower Duo, the Strung Out Trio, Kiev Philharmonic, Lviv Chamber Orchestra, as well as artists such as pianists Jeffrey Jacob, Jenny Cruz and Deborah Nemko and soprano Nancy Ogle.

 

An avid baseball aficionado, Scott is the Varsity baseball coach at Wisdom High School in Saint Agatha, Maine, and recently completed his first season playing for the Edmundston Republicains (New Brunswick, Canada) of the Bas St. Laurent Men’s league. For the Republicains, he played second and third base, pitched long relief, and finished the season with a .266 batting average.

8 Strings & a Whistle

Eight Strings & a Whistle (Suzanne Gilchrest, flute; Ina Litera, viola; and Matthew Goeke, cello) has been performing at festivals and on concert series throughout the United States since 1998. Appearing annually at the Tenri Cultural Institute, the Trio has also performed at Merkin Concert Hall and the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space in New York City. Eight Strings & a Whistle has been featured at the Queens New Music Festival and Spectrum, the contemporary new music venue on Manhattan’s vibrant Lower East Side, as well as the Bar Harbor Festival’s New Composers Concert. The Trio has been Artist-in-Residence at Arcady Music Festival and Schoodic Arts for All, and has performed at Skidmore College, the Universities of Maine at Fort Kent and Presque Isle, and the City University of New York. Television and radio appearances include Minding Your Business (MNN TV) and numerous live performances on Maine Public Radio.

Beth Levin

Beth Levin’s artistry invokes an uncanny sense of hearing for the first time works long thought familiar, as though the pianist herself were discovering a piece in the playing of it. Such a style of refreshment and renewal can be traced back to Levin’s unique artistic lineage. As a child prodigy, she made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 12. She was subsequently taught and guided by legendary pianists such as Rudolf Serkin, Leonard Shure, Dorothy Taubman, and Paul Badura-Skoda (who praised her as “a pianist of rare qualities and the highest professional caliber”). Her deep well of experience allows Levin to reach back through the golden age of the Romantic composers and connect to the sources of the great pianistic traditions, to Bach, to Mozart, to Beethoven. Levin has appeared as a concerto soloist with numerous symphony orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Boston Civic Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Levin has worked with noted conductors such as Arthur Fiedler, Tonu Kalam, Milton Katims, Joseph Silverstein, and Benjamin Zander. Chamber music festival collaborations have brought her to the Marlboro Festival, Casals Festival, Harvard, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Ankara Music Festival, and the Blue Hill Festival, collaborating with groups such as the Gramercy Trio (founding member), the Audubon Quartet, the Vermeer Quartet, and the Trio Borealis, with which she has toured extensively. Among Levin’s recordings are live performances of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Centaur Records, 2008), and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations (Centaur Records, 2011). Her interpretation of the Diabelli Variations has been described as “consistently fascinating” (Steve Smith, NY Times) and simply “stunning” (Robert Levine, Stereophile Magazine). Of Levin’s Goldberg Variations, Peter Burwasser of Fanfare Magazine stated that she plays “as if she is in love with the notes...with always the sense that she is exploring Bach’s genius.” Her performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio, WGBH (Boston), WFMT (Chicago) and WNYC, WNYE, and WQXR (New York). For all her devotion to the Romantic canon, Levin remains committed to the performance of the music of our time, interpreting composers such as Henryk Gorecki, Scott Wheeler, Roger Stubblefi eld, Frank Warren, Mohammed Farouz, and Michael Rose, among many others. Her closest collaborators have been the composers David Del Tredici and Andrew Rudin, both of whom have written works for her.
