THROUGH THE REEDS is a collection of woodwind concerti from American composer Walter Ross. Ross, a lifelong musician and composer, has historically worked most closely with instruments in the woodwind family; the four concerti on this album, all of which feature a woodwind solo, highlight his preference for the family and his keen ability to compose works for oboe, bassoon, and flute.

Ross’ compositions are marked by his drive for purpose; each work he crafts is written for a specific group or soloist, allowing him to best take advantage of the performers’ skills, abilities, and preferences. With over 150 works in his catalog of compositions, Ross has become a strong player in the classical community, gearing his music towards the enjoyment of not only the listening audience, but the performers as well.

Walter Ross

Walter Ross (b. 1936), whose works have been performed in over 40 countries, is perhaps best known for his compositions featuring brass and woodwinds. Raised in Nebraska, he became a professional orchestral French horn player by the age of seventeen and went on to gain more performance experience in college as member of the University of Nebraska symphonic band, as a string bass player in a polka band, and as a flute player with a baroque ensemble. Currently he plays bass in the Blue Ridge Chamber Orchestra in Charlottesville VA.
