Alla Elana Cohen is a distinguished composer, pianist, music theorist and teacher who came to the United States in 1989 from Soviet Russia. She now lives in Boston, and is a Professor at Berklee College of Music and of New England Conservatory of Music.



Receiving her education in Moscow and graduating from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1977 with the highest honors of distinction.


Creative achievements

As a composer, Alla Cohen works in all genres of orchestral, chamber and operatic music, and has an extensive catalogue of original compositions. Alla Cohen’s compositions, often with the composer at the piano, are regularly performed and recorded with much success and acclaim. Alla Elana Cohen has been recognized as a composer on international level, being a winner of Director's Choice Award at International Composers' Competition (2012­2013), organized by Boston Metro Opera, for her opera buffa “The Cunning Housekeeper”; of International Prize for Excellence in Composition, awarded by National Academy of Music in conjunction with Municipal Conservatories in Neapolis and Sykies, Greece. She has been also recognized as a composer by ASCAP, being annually a recipient of ASCAPLUS Awards, and received commissions from Music Teachers' National Association and from several outstanding solo musicians and musical ensembles.


A radio program the first in a cycle of programs featuring Alla Cohen’s music was broadcast in 2013 in Moscow, on Russia’sState Radio and TV Center of Musical Programs, on the radio station Orpheus, the musical radio station that has thehighest rating. The author of the program was world­renowned writer and musician, leading Expert and Curator of Nobel Prize Concerts, Mikhail Kazinik.The program almost an hour long, featuring Alla Cohen’s music was presented by Mr. Kazinik on Russian­American United4Good Radio station on the 3rd of October 2015.


Works of Alla Elana Cohen are performed by stellar, internationally acclaimed performers, and performing ensembles, such as Ariel String Quartet, JACK Quartet, Xanthos Ensemble, Sebastian Baverstam, Moran Katz, Mickey Katz, Bianca Garcia, etc. Concerts of Alla Cohen’s music are regular and very successful (including annual concerts of only her music at NEC, Old South Church and Goethe Institut, Boston, and participation at many Berklee Faculty Recitals).


Alla Cohen’s concerts receive excellent reviews in the media. In February 2009 she had a very successful landmark concert at Calderwood Pavilion (Wimberly Theatre), Boston Center for the Arts in the South End, which was hosted by TV legend Joyce Kulhawik and great musician Ran Blake, and which prompted articles in every Boston media source, including the Boston Globe (“Composer Alla Cohen is a pianist and music teacher whose deeply spiritual works are reaching a broader audience.”), the Boston Herald (“Pianist/composer Alla Cohen scales new heights”), the Boston Phoenix editor’s pick (“Alla Elana Cohen may be the best classical musician you’ve never heard of”), WGBH TV (“She’s absolutely fascinating,” and [we’ve] “received many highly positive responses to this segment on Alla Cohen–a lot of good feedback, in which people praised both the music and Alla’s sincerity”), and in a featured video on In February 2010, a concert of Alla Cohen’s music was presented and sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel to New England at the Goethe Institut Boston. In this concert, Ms. Cohen’s works were performed by stellar Israeli musicians. In its editor’s pick 2/19/10, the Boston Globe wrote, “and when the program features compositions of pianist and composer Alla Cohen, you go.” The Boston Musical Intelligencer wrote, “it was a full house with everyone determined not to miss out on this important event...the concert was certainly a success." In all her concerts, Alla Cohen always participates also as a pianist, both soloist and ensemblist.

The CD praise Him with harp and lyre, praise Him with strings and pipes” received a rave review/preview in ArtFuse. Alla Cohen’s CD entitled ”Dedications” was released in September 2008, as a result of her being a recipient of Berklee Recording Grant. Her next CD, ”The Route of Compassion”, was recorded live by Sound Mirror at the Calderwood Pavilion concert and was released in the summer of 2009. The CD ”The Road that Chooses Us” was released simultaneously with the CD ”The Day of Atonement”, and in these two CDs, as well as in the CD “praise Him with harp and lyre, praise Him with strings and pipes” ,the composer presents her compositions for chamber orchestra and large ensembles, among other chamber works. A CD “Jupiter Duo” was recorded in Jordan Hall of New England Conservatory and was released in June 2010. It features Alla Cohen's works for cello and piano, for cello solo and for piano solo, performed by Alla Cohen with her longtime performer and prizewinner of international competitions Sebastian Baverstam. Alla Cohen’s next CD, “Hoffmanniana,” was released in late October 2014. On the 1st of December 2015 Alla recorded her works for her CD “Red Lilies of Bells, Golden Lilies of Bells, White Lilies of Bells”, which is set for release in February, 2017 by Parma Recordings under Ravello label.


Teaching Excellence and Pedagogical Achievements

She is recognized at national and international levels as a composition teacher and mentor of many prizewinning students­composers of all age categories. Since the year 2000, students of Alla Cohen have received about 275 prizes and distinctions (such as Honorable Mentions) at different state, division and national and international Composers’ Competitions. Alla Cohen was awarded by ASCAP with a special Award for “inspiring, educating and mentoring young musicians to become composers of tomorrow,” as well as being the recipient of numerous certificates of recognition and awards as a teacher of MTNA (Music Teachers’ National Association) Young Composers’ Competition National level winners. In 2008 Alla Cohen was awarded by Berklee College with Ted Pease Award for Excellence in Teaching.



Alla Cohen is the author of an ear training book, Perfect Pitch for You,published in 2007 by Len Rhodes Music Publishing, and the author of two books dedicated to various aspects of harmony: The Art of Modulationand In the Vertical Realm.
